Choose the dominant surface
Begin with the largest permanent elements—flooring, walls or cabinetry—and set a calm base. View real samples under the room’s natural and artificial lighting.
Control the number of competing finishes
A restrained palette usually feels more considered. Repeat your key wood tone, stone texture or metal finish rather than introducing a different accent in every room.
Balance warm and cool undertones
Two neutrals can clash even when both appear beige or grey. Compare samples next to each other and check them at different times of day.
Test the transitions
Review materials where rooms meet and at visible edges. A good palette works across the whole home, including details such as handles, skirtings and junctions.
